Biology II Chapter 19 Review

QuestionAnswer
How are protists classified? Why will this change the future? Name the current groups. Protists are classified by their method of obtaining nutrition. The groups protists are classified into are animal-like, plant-like, and fungus-like. As scientists learn more information about the protists, the organization of it will be affected.
How do scientists think that protists with chloroplast and mitochondria formed? The scientists believe in the Theory of Endosymbiosis which gives reasoning to how the chloroplast and mitochondria. (One large prok cell engulfed a small prok cell and eventually became one euk cell over time).
How do amoebas get rid of waste since they don't have an anal pore? Amoebas get rid of waste by diffusion across the plasma membrane.
How do amoeba survive harsh conditions? Amoeba survive in harsh conditions by developing a "test" or a hard porous covering similar to a shell which protects the cell and its membrane.
How do amoebas move and get food? Be specific for each. Amoebas move by a temporary extension of cytoplasm called a pseudopod. The pseudopod reaches out and the rest of the amoeba pulled along behind it. Amoebas eat by using the pseudopod to engulf a smaller organisms into the cytoplasm.
All sporozoans are ______, one disease they cause is ______ which is transmitted by ______. All sporozoans are parasitic, one disease they cause is Malaria which is transmitted by mosquitos.
Two diseases that zooflagellates cause are: Chagas disease and African sleeping sickness.
What are 3 ways algae is classified? 1. The type of chlorophyll and secondary pigments, 2. The method of food storage, 3. The composition of the cell wall
How do algae that have secondary pigments benefit from having them? Secondary pigments allow the algae to absorb light energy in very deep water.
How do diatoms store their food? Why is this beneficial? Diatoms store their food as an oil instead of a carbohydrate. This is beneficial because the oil helps the diatom float toward the top of the water to absorb energy from the sun and be a nutritious food source for many marine animals.
What is the source of diatomaceous earth? How is it used? Fallen silica walls from dead diatoms are the source of sediment on the diatomaceous earth. This earth can be used in tooth and metal polishes, due to the presence of diatom shells.
Explain the function of an euglena's eyespot. An euglena's eyespot is used only to sense light or dark environments.
Name 4 common uses of algae (one from each group). 1. Red algae is used in soups and sauces 2. Brown algae is used in ice creams and paints 3. Green algae is used in salads and relishes 4. Diatoms are used in industrial and cooking oils

The fungus got to Ireland by the holes on the ships, the disease was airborne, it rotted the potato plant and made it inedible, people were losing jobs, property, and not to mention, starving to death bc the potato was their #1 food source.
