Water, Matter & pH
Unit 2: The Chemistry of Life
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Polar | When electrons are not shared equally between two atoms, some atoms have a slight positive charge and some atoms have a slight negative charge |
| Adhesion | A property of water that refers to water's ability to stick to other substances. |
| Cohesion | A property of water that refers to water's ability stick to itself. |
| Covalent Bond | A bond between two atoms in which electrons are shared. A covalent bond can either be polar or nonpolar. |
| Ionic Bond | A bond created by the attraction between a positive and negative ion. |
| Electron | The negatively charged part(s) of an atom located on the outside of the atom. |
| Neutron | The part of an atom with no charge (neutral). The neutron(s) are located in the middle of an atom. |
| Proton | The positively charged part(s) of an atom located in the middle of the atom. |
| Universal Solvent | A substance that is really good at dissolving a variety of other substances. Water is considered the universal solvent. |
| Base | A substance that has a pH greater than 7 on the pH scale. |
| Alkaline | A substance that has a pH greater than 7 on the pH scale. |
| Acid | A substance with a pH less than 7 |
| pH Scale | A measure of how acidic or basic a substance is. The pH scale goes from 0 - 14. A pH of 7 is neutral. A pH less than 7 is acidic. A pH greater than 7 is basic. |
| Hydrogen Bond | A weak bond that holds one water molecule to another water molecule. |
| Surface Tension | the tendency for water molecules to stick together when at the boundary of a gas and a liquid |
| Capillary Action | A property of water that refers to water's ability to move up a thin tube (like a plant stem) because of cohesion and adhesion |
| Neutral | A substance with a pH of 7 is neutral. Water is the only substance with a truly neutral pH. |
