| control group | the group NOT exposed to the independent variable |
| experimental group | the group EXPOSED to the independent variable |
| independent variable | the difference between the control group and the experimental group; the factor being tested |
| dependent variable | the factor being measured which is influenced by the independent variable |
| locomotion | moving from one place to another |
| assimilation | the assembling of the component parts that make up the living material of an organism |

| organic | describes compounds containing carbon; present in all living things |
