scientific method a logical procedure for choosing an answer to a question
workability the application of knowledge to predict outcomes in similar situations
control group the group NOT exposed to the independent variable
experimental group the group EXPOSED to the independent variable
independent variable the difference between the control group and the experimental group; the factor being tested
dependent variable the factor being measured which is influenced by the independent variable
locomotion moving from one place to another
assimilation the assembling of the component parts that make up the living material of an organism
biogenesis life comes from life
organic describes compounds containing carbon; present in all living things
protoplasm the living material of an organism
inorganic describes compounds that do not contain carbon; usually derived from nonliving material
irritability the capacity of an organism to respond to stimuli in the environment
food an organic, energy-containing substance
simple microscope one single lens
compound microscope two sets of lenses located in the objectives and the ocular (eyepiece)
electron microscope magnify from 1,500 to 250,000X; electromagnets replace lenses
scanning electron microscope used to obtain 3-D images of the surfaces of structures; can magnify 20,000X
transmission electron microscope produces an image similar to a light microscope; has greatest magnification
