TermDefinition
cell membrane this is a biological membrane that separates the interior of all cells from the surrounding environment
cell wall the cell wall is the tough, flexible but sometimes rigid layer that surrounds some types of cell
cellular respiration cellular respiration is the set of metabolic reactions and processes that take place in the cells of organisms to convert biochemical energy from nutrients to ATP and then to waste produce
chloroplast they are responsible for photosynthesis and carry out almost all fatty acid synthesis in plants
chromatin it is a combination of DNA and proteins that make up the contents of the nucleus of a cell.
chromosome a chromosome is an organized structure of DNA, protein, and RNA found in cells
cristae one of the inward projections or folds of the inner membrane of a mitochondria
cytoplasm the cytoplasm is a clear substance that consists of all of the contents outside of the nucleus of a membrane bound cell
cytoskeleton the cytoskeleton is a cellular scaffolding or skeleton contained within a cells cytoplasm
Golgi bodies the Golgi body packages proteins inside the cell before they are sent to their destinations
lysosomes lysosomes are cellular organelles that contain acid hydro-lase enzymes that break down waste material and cellular debris
matrix matrix is a material in animal or plant cells in which more specialized structures are embedded and a specific part of the mitochondria that is the site of oxidation of organic molecules
mitochondria they are structures that generate energy to run the cell
nuclear envelop this is the double lipid bi-layer membrane which surrounds the genetic material in nucleolus in eukaryotic cells
nuclear pore nuclear pore are large protein complexes that cross the nuclear envelop, which is the double membrane surrounding the eukaryotic cell nucleus
nucleolus the nucleolus is a non-membrane bond structure found in the nucleus of cells
nucleus the control center of cell containing the cells chromosomal DNA
organelle an organelle is a specialized sub-unit within a cell that has a specific function, and it is usually separately enclosed within its own lipid bi-layer
polysome these are a cluster of ribosomes bound to mRNA molecule
ribosome the ribosome is a large and complex molecular machine found within a living cell that serves as the primary site of biological protein synthesis
rough endoplasmic reticulum the rough endoplasmic reticulum is an organelle of cells in eukaryotic organism that form an interconnected network of membrane vesicle with studded ribosomes
smooth endoplasmic reticulum the smooth endoplasmic reticulum is an organelle of cells in eukaryotic organism that forms an interconnected network of membrane vesicles without ribosomes
vacuole a vacuole is a membrane bound organelle which is present in all plant and fungal cell and some protist, animal and bacterial cells
vesicle a vesicle is a small bubble within a cell, and thus enclosed by lipid bi-layer.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
