TermDefinition
What is evolution? The process of change that allows and organism's to adapt to their environment.
What are emergent properties? Properties that are not present at the preceding level.
What is a Systems biology? An approach that attempts to model the dynamic behavior of whole biological systems based on a study of the interactions among the system's parts.
What does life require? -Energy (to carry out everyday functions) -Transfer -Transformation
What is an eukaryotic cell? Subdivided by internal membranes into various membrane-enclosed organelles.
Biotic living things that shape an ecosystem. Ex: Pathogens, parasites, predators, competitors, and food availability.
Abiotic non-living chemical and physical factors in the environment, which affect ecosystems EX: The amount and variability of precipitation directly determines where red kangaroos live.
Dispersal The movement of individuals or gametes away from their area of origin or from centers of high population density.
Density of a population Is the number of individuals per unit area or volume
Dispersion Is the pattern of spacing among individuals within the boundaries of the population Ex: Massive white birds aligned picture
Mark recapture method You grab an animal and put a tractor and release him back into its environment.
emigration the movement of individuals out of a population and into other locations
Demography the study of the vital statistics of populations and how they change over time.
cohort a group of individuals of the same age, from birth until all of the individuals are dead
Density Independent A birth rate or death rate that does NOT change with population density
Density Dependent A death rate that rises as population density rises
Population Dynamics Such population fluctuations from year to year or place to place
metapopulation When a number of local populations are liked
Species Diversity The variety of different kinds of organisms that make up the community
Species Richness The number of different species in the community.
Relative Abundance The proportion each species represents of all individuals in the community.
Invasive Species Organisms that become established outside their native range.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
