TermDefinition
Sauropsida (snakes, lizards, birds, crocodiles, etc.) Characterized by scales made of beta keratin
Amniota (contains sauropsids and synapsids) Clade containing animals that lay amniotic eggs (on land). There are specialized extraembryotic membranes that let them lay the eggs on land.
Synapsida (mammals) Characterized by fur, lactation, warm-blooded (endothermic), etc. Also, they have a single temporal fenestra in the skull (an opening behind the orbit; only a single one)
Myxini (hagfish) Characterized by no jaws; teeth used to scavenge; brain with 3 regions (fore, mid, hindbrain); no vertebrae (neural crest cells)
Cephalochordata (lancelot/amphioxus) Chordates' 5 defining characteristics include: pharyngeal gill slits, post-anal tail, notochord, dorsal hollow nerve cord, and endostyle.
Chondrichthyes (sharks, skates, rays, ratfishes) Characterized by jaws, paired fins, no swim bladder, and a cartilaginous skeleton
Dipnoi (lungfishes) Characterized by fleshy fins used for locomotion; lungs and gills; excavation into mud when it's hot
Actinopterygii (ray-finned fishes) Characterized by true bone (endochondral bone) and a swim bladder.
Petromyzontida (lamprey) Characterized by lack of jaws and just tooth-like structures that rasp away at a surface to gather food; they are parasitic.
Actinistia (coelocanth) Characterized by lobed fins; lives in deep water.
Lissamphibia (salamanders, frogs, caecilians) Characterized by lack of scales; thin, moist skin; cutaneous respiration; no amniotic eggs (lay them in the water); glands contained in the skin that secrete mucus, poison, etc.
