| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| freezing point | the temperature at which a liquid turns into a solid when cooled |
| boiling point | the point at which water turns to vapor |
| surface tension | the result of an inward pull among the molecules of a liquid that brings the molecules on the surface closer together |
| cohesion | the action or fact of forming a united whole |
| adhesion | the action or process of adhering to a surface or object |
| melting point | the temperature at which a given solid will melt |
| specific heat | the amount of heat required to raise the temperature of 1 g. of a substance to 1° C |
| intermolecular force | forces that act between stable molecules or between stable molecules or between functional groups of macromolecules |
| molecule | a group of atoms bonded together, representing the smallest fundamental unit of a chemical compound that can take part in a chemical reaction |
| evaporation | the process by which a liquid changes into a gas |
| density | a property of matter representing the mass per unit of volume |
| freshwater | water that is not salty and has little to no taste, color, or smell; most lakes and rivers are made up of this |
| condensation | water vapor becoming a liquid |
| precipitation | any type of liquid or solid water that falls to Earth's surface, such as rain, snow, or hail |
| water vapor | water in its gaseous state |
| universal solvent | due to its polarity and ability to dissolve many different solutes, water is this |
| solute | the component in a solution that is dissolved dissolved in the solvent |
| atom | the basic unit of a chemical |
| Fahrenheit | of or denoting a scale of temperature on which water freezes at 32° and boils at 212° under standard conditions |
| refraction | bending or turning of light waves when they pass through water |
| reflection | projecting back an image through light without absolving it |
| ion | an atom or molecule with a net electric charge due to the loss or gain of one or more electrons |
| cation | atom or group of atoms that has a positive charge |
| anion | ion or group of ions that has a negative charge |
| electrolyte | chemical compound that breaks into separate ions when dissolved or molten to produce an electrically conducive product |
| conductivity | the ability or power to conduct or transmit heat, electricity, or sound |
| polarity | the state of having a molecule with a net dipole as a result of opposing charges |
| controlled variable | constant variable |
| dependent variable | altered based on changes with independent variable |
| independent variable | variable that changes |
