| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Boiling Point | The point at which water in liquid form turns to vapor |
| Freezing Point | The point at which water at liquid form turns solid |
| Specific Heat | The heat required to raise the temperature of the unit mass of a given substance by a given amount. Usually measured by the amount of heat it takes to raise the temperature of 1 g of a substance 1 degree Celsius. |
| Melting Point | The temperature at which a given solid will melt |
| Intermolecular Force | Forces that act between stable molecules or functional groups of macromolecules |
| Molecule | A group of atoms bonded together, representing the smallest fundamental until of a chemical compound that can take part in a chemical reaction. |
| Cohesion | The attraction between water molecules |
| Adhesion | Attractions between molecules with different molecular properties |
| Evaporation | The process by which a liquid changes into a gas |
| Density | Property of matter representing the mass per until of volume |
| Fresh Water | Water that is not salty and has little or no taste, color, or smell. Most lakes and rivers are made up of fresh water. |
| Condensation | Water vapor becoming a liquid |
| Precipitation | Any type of liquid or solid water that falls to Earth’s surface, such as rain, snow, or hail. |
| Water Vapor | Water in the form of gas |
| Surface tension | The result of an inward pull among the molecules of a liquid that brings the molecules on the surface closer together. |
| Universal Solvent | Water is this due to its polarity and ability to dissolve many different solutes. |
| Atom | The basic unit of a chemical |
| Fahrenheit | A scale of temperature on which water freezes at 32 degrees and boils at 212 degrees |
| Solute | The component in a solution that is dissolved |
| Refraction | The bending or turning of light waves when it passes thorough water |
| Reflection | Projecting back an image through light without absorbing it |
| Ion | An atom or group of atoms that has acquired an electrical charge by gaining or losing one or more electrons |
| Cation | An ion or group of ions that have a positive charge |
| Anion | An ion or group of ions that have a negative charge |
| Electrolyte | A chemical compound that breaks into separate ions when it is dissolved to produce an electrically conductive product. |
| Conductivity | Ability or power to conduct or transmit heat, electricity, or sound. |
| Polarity | The condition of having poles or being aligned with or directed toward poles, especially magnetic or electric poles. |
| Controlled Variable | Variables are quantities that scientists want to remain constant |
| Dependent Variable | The variable that responds to the changes made |
| Independent Variable | The variable that is changed by the scientist |
