Sci8/Periodic Table
First 9 Weeks Review
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Elements are arranged by atomic number. | There are 7 periods that are in rows on the periodic table. There are 18 families that are in columns on the periodic table. The families have common characteristics. |
| Family #1 Alkali Metals | VERY REACTIVE. |
| Family #17 Halogens | is reactive because they only need one electron in the outer shell to be complete. The elements are less reactive as you move down the family. |
| Family #18 Nobel Gases | not reactive at all. The outer shell or energy level is complete. |
| Metals | Most of the elements on the periodic table are _______. ________ are good conductors of heat and electricity. ________ have luster. ________ are malleable and ductile. |
| Nonmetals | have opposite properties of metals. They are brittle. They are good insulators. |
| Metalloids | have properties of metals and nonmetals. |
| Ionic bond | metal loses an electron to a nonmetal |
| Metallic bond | atoms of metals pool their electrons with other metals |
| Covalent bond | 2 metals share electrons |
| Acids | can cause changes in metals. #1- #6 on a pH scale. |
| Bases | If something is too acidic and you want to bring it down to NEUTRAL, you would add this. #8- #14 on a pH scale. |
| Neutral | #7 on the pH scale |
| Elements on the periodic table | join to form compounds. |
| A molecule formula that starts with an H (Hydrogen) | is usually an acid. (Examples: HCl, HBr, HI) |
| Base examples | LiOH NaOH KOH |
