Ecology

Question/Term Answer/Definition
Ecology A branch of biology concerned with the study of the interaction of living organisms with each other and with their environment
Ecosystem A community of organisms that interact with their environment
Biosphere A region of the Earth where life can exist
Habitat A place where an organism lives
Abiotic factor Anything that is non-living and has an effect on living organisms in an ecosystem
Climatic factors Weather conditions that have an effect on living organisms in an ecosystem
Edaphic factors Anything relating to the soil or geology of land that have an effect on living organisms in an ecosystem
Biotic factor Anything that is living and has an effect on other living organisms in an ecosystem
Pathogenic Capable of producing disease
What does a grazing food chain represent? It represents the sequence of predator-prey relationships in an ecosystem.
Define a food web A food web is two or more interconnected food chains
What does an ecological pyramid of numbers show? It shows the numbers of organisms at each trophic level in a food chain
Niche The functional role an organism plays in its habitat
Name the factors that control the numbers of organisms in an ecosystem Population and community
Differentiate between Population and Community Population is a group of organisms living in a habitat that belong to the same species WHILE community is a group of organisms living in a habitat that belong to many different species
Competition The struggle between organisms for a resource that is in limited supply
Resource A stock or supply such as food that can be drawn on
Name the two types of Competition Contest competition and Scramble competition
Differentiate between Contest and Scramble competition Contest competition is the direct fight between two organisms for a resource that is in short supply WHILE Scramble competition is the struggle amongst a number of organisms for a resource in short supply
Nutrient recycling The process of exchanging important elements between living organisms and the environment
Carbon cycle The process through which elemental carbon(in the form of biomolecules) is exchanged between living organisms and their environment
Nitrogen cycle The process through which elemental nitrogen (in the form of biomolecules) is exchanged between living organisms and their environment
Pollution This is simply defined as any undesirable change to a habitat
Eutrophication A process where water receives too many nutrients that stimulate excessive algal growth

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
