| capillary action | the combined force of attraction amoung water molecules |

| lake turnover | the process of ponds turning to meadows do to the nutrients building up |
| flood | when bodies of water overflow and spread across plains and streets |
| wetlands | an area of land that is covered in a shallow layer of water during some or all of the year |
| salt marsh | tall grass located along both coasts of the US |
| bogs | a mossy area with many living organisms |
| filter | traps pollution and help during storms |
| buffer | acts as a dam to stop flood water |
| permeable | a material that allows water to pass through it |
| impermeable | a material that does not allow water to pss through it |
| saturated zone | an area of permeable rock or soil that fills with water |
| unsaturated zone | a layer of rock or soil above the water table |
| water table | the top of the saturated zone |
| artesian well | when water rises because of the pressure within an aquifer |
| eutrophication | when nutrients build up for many years in a lake |
| nutrients | substances that enable plants and algae to grow |
| evaporation | when molecules at the surface of a liquid substance absorb energy and change to a gas |
| condensation | the process of which a gas changes to a liquid |
| solvent | the substance that does the dissolving |
| transpiration | the process in which water is given off throug the leaves |
| bayous | a riverbank, or a level of water that rises and then goes down |
| aquifer | any underground layer of permeable rock or sediment that holds water |
| solution | a mixture that forms when on substance dissolves another |
| watershed | the land area that supplies water for a river system |
| mouth/delta | where a river meats another body of water |
| oxbow lake | a meander tat curves back into itself |
| mangrove | tall strong grasses that grow in rich, muddy, salt marshes |
