Earth Science- Vocab
| Term | Definition |

| Mass | The amount of matter in an object |
| Volume | The amount of a three-dimensional space occupied by a liquid, solid, or gas |
| Density | The amount of mass of a substance in a given volume |
| Gram | Metric unit used to measure mass |
| Triple Beam Balance | A scale with three beams that is used in a lab to measure mass |
| Hypothesis | A possible explanation for a set of observation or answer to a scientific question; must be testable |
| Controlled Experiment | An experiment in which only one variable is manipulated at a time |
| Variable | A factor that can change in an experiment |
| Manipulated Variable | The one factor that a scientist changes during an experiment; also called independent variable |
| Responding Variable | The factor that changes as a result of the manipulated variable that changes during an experiment; or independent variable in an experiment |
| Scientific Inquiry | The ongoing process of discovery in science. The diverse ways in which scientist study the natural world. |
| Earth Science | The science that focuses on planet earth and its place in the universe |
| Conduction | The direct transfer of thermal energy from one substance to another substance that it is touching |
| Convection | The transfer of thermal energy by the movement by the movement of fluid |
| Radiation | The direct transfer of energy through space by electromagnetic waves |
| Heat | The transfer of thermal energy from one object to another because of a difference in temperature |
| Convection Current | The movement of a fluid, caused by differences in temperature, that transfer heat from one part of the fluid to another |
