Cell Basics

Cells have many parts that work together to control an organism.

TermDefinition
Cell —the basic building blocks of all living things.
Cell Theory —has three main parts: (1) All living things are made of cells. (2) All life activities take place IN cells (3) Existing cells make new cells.
Microscope —an instrument used to magnify very little things.
Animal Cell —the type of cell found only in animals and people.
Plant Cell —the type of cell found only in plants
Cell Wall —the stiff outer layer of a PLANT CELL that protects the cell and gives it shape.
Cell Membrane —a thin layer that covers both plant and animal cells and controls what goes in and out of the cells.
Cytoplasm —a colorless, jellylike substance that fills the inside of both plant and animal cells.
Mitochondria —an organelle in a plant or animal cell that breaks down sugars to produce energy for the cell.
Chloroplast —a structure in a plant cell that helps the plant makes its own food.
Vacuole —a storage space in a plant or animal cell
Nucleus —the control center of the cell
Nuclear Membrane —a thin layer that surrounds the nucleus and controls what comes in and out.
Chromosone —a small structure in the nucleus that is made of DNA. It contains the instructions for all the activities of the cell and the traits of the organism.
DNA —the chemical that makes up the chromosones. It is called the "blueprint of life" because it contains the information to build an organism.
