What animals are the most colorful vertebrates of all that God created? birds
What is molting? When birds lose their old feathers
What is the shaft of a bird's feather made of? keratin
What are barbules? Tiny hairs on the barbs of the bird's feather that work like little "zippers" to keep the feather neat.
What is anting? When a bird sunbathes on an anthill in order to let the ants crawl over them to eat the lice and mites to get rid of them.
What is preening? When a bird cleans and straightens its feathers.
What are powder down feathers? A kind of feather that grows all the time and its tip crumbles into a very fine powder that the bird uses while preening.
What are bristles? Hair like feathers that are located near the birds eyes, mouth and nostrils that are used like cat's whiskers.
What is a cormorant? A bird that does not waterproof its feathers so that it can dive deep into the water to catch fish.
What are pigments? They are chemicals that have specific colors.
Can what a bird eats affect what color its feathers are? Yes.
Do all birds have a preen gland? No.
Which kind of feathers give the bird its shape and form? (These are also the most common feathers that we find laying on the ground.) Contour
