QuestionAnswer
What is a cell? It is a living thing and can be classified as prokaryotic and eukaryotic
What is a virus? Infectious particle consisting of DNA/RNA core enclosed in a protein shell
I am polio...what am I? Virus
I am food poisoning... cell
The envelope that makes up the outer surface of a cell cell (plasma) membrane
Why is the cell membrane selectively permeable? because it only allows certain materials into and out of the cell
What is the cell theory? *All living things made of cells. *smallest unit of living things *New cells are produced only from existing cells – living things do not “spontaneously generate”
Who first saw the cells under a microscope and thought cork plant cells looked like "cells in a monastery"? Robert Hooke
Tiny organisms in pond water was seen by? Anton van Leeuwenhowk
In what year and which scientist conclude that all plants were made of cells Matthias Schleiden
What did Theodor Schwann conclude in 1839? all animals were made of cells
New cells can only be produced from the division of existing cells. Who discovered this and what year? Rudolph Virchow - 1855
What is a prokaryote cell? Cells that DO NOT contain a nucleus
Cell that DO contain a nucleus and many specialized “organelles” are called? Eukaryote
What is diffusion? The movement of materials into and out of cells
diffusion of water across a selectively permeable membrane is called? Osmosis
What is facilitated diffusion? diffusion through the channel proteins in the membrane.
What is passive transport? Particles of a solute and solvent are constantly moving from areas of high concentration to areas of low concentration.
particles continue to move until the concentrations are equal. What is another word for that? Equilibrium
What type of transportation requires no energy used by the cell? Passive transport
The increased pressure that results from an increase of water is called? Osmotic Pressure
shrinking of the cell due to water leaving the cell is called? Plasmolysis
bursting of the cell due to water entering the cell is called? Cytolysis
What is active transport? Active transport uses energy to transport particles through membrane against the concentration gradient
Is energy required in bult transport? Yes
What is Endocytosis? taking in (engulfing) of particles into a cell.
What are the 2 types of endocytosis? Pinocytosis and Phagocytosis
What is pinocytosis? taking in of liquid or dissolved materials
What is phagocytosis? taking in of large solid materials
removal of wastes out of a cell is called? Exocytosis
A cell is said to be _______________ when the concentration of solutes in the environment and in the cell are the same isotonic
The cell solution is said to be _______________ when there is a lower concentration of solute in the environment than that in the cell hypertonic
The cell solution is said to be _______________ when there is a higher concentration ofsolute in the environment than that in the cell hypotonic

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
