Cell Organelles

TermDefinition
Nucleus Brain of the cell; directs all cell activities.
Cell membrane Acts as a doorway or gate allowing certain materials in and out of the cell.
Cell wall Gives shape and support; made up of cellulose.
Mitochondria Powerhouse of the cell; where food is turned into usable energy, called ATP.
Lysosomes Acts as garbage collectors of the cell; contains digestive enzymes that destroy any cellular waste.
Chloroplasts Green organelle that is filled with chlorophyll; where photosynthesis takes place. Only found in plant cells.
Vacuoles Stores water and nutrients in the cell; it is a storage tank.
Cytoplasm Constantly moving gelatin like material of the cell; it contains all of the other cell organelles.
Nucleolus Produces RNA.
Ribosomes Makes proteins.
Golgi Body (Golgi Apparatus) Processes, packages, and secretes proteins.
Endoplasmic reticulum The transportation system of the cell. It transports proteins throughout the cell.
Robert Hooke Discovered cells.
Robert Brown Discovered the nucleus of a cell.
Schwann and Schleiden Developed the cell theory.
