| arterial blood | pH about 7.45 |
| venous blood | pH about 7.35 |
| blood pH | 7.35 to 7.45 |
| buffers | chemical pH control mechanism |
| physiological pH | respiratory and urinary |
| metabolic acidosis | may be caused by renal disease, diabetes, or prolonged diarrhea |
| metabolic alkalosis | complication of severe vomiting |
| respiratory acidosis | may be caused by emphysema, pnuemonia, drugs, or anesthesia |
| respiratory alkalosis | may be caused by hyperventilation |
