Energy Ability to do work or bring about a change
Kinetic Energy Energy of motion
Potential Energy Stored energy
Mechanical energy has potential for a reaction, though at present is in a stored form
Chemical Energy released as a result of a chemical reaction, as in the metabolism of food
First law (law of conservation of energy) cannot be created or destroyed, but it can be changed from one form to another
Second law of Energy cannot be changed from one form to another without a loss of usable energy
Reactant original chemical
Product chemical that is created when you combine two or more reactants
Exergonic Reactions energy is released
Endergonic Reactions requires an input of energy to occur
ATP (adenosine triphosphate) High energy compound used to drive metabolic reactions
enzyme protein molecules that function as organic catalysts to speed a chemical reaction
metabolic pathway requires a unique and specific enzyme
energy of activation The energy that must be added to cause molecules to react with one another; causes reactants to become products
substrate A surface on which an organism grows or is attached
active site undergoes a change in shape to accommodate the substrates
denatured take away or alter the natural qualities of
oxidation is the loss of electrons
reduction is the gain of electrons
