Unit 2
Collecting Data & The Scientific Method
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Step #1 | Choose a problem - what do you want to learn? |
| Step #2 | Research the problem - gather as much information |
| Step #3 | Write a hypothesis - predict the outcome |
| Step #4 | Experiment - Test your hypothesis |
| Step #5 | Analysis your data - organize your findings |
| Step #6 | Draw a conclusion - share your results to prove hypothesis correct or incorrect |
| Data Table | used to organize and present observations and measurements |
| Graphs | are kinds of pictures used to present quantitative data |
| Graphs should include... | A title, headings, axis line letters, increments (numbers), categories |
| Y axis | Vertical axis (why so high) - LeBron James line |
| X axis | Horizontal axis (punched out) Mike Tyson line |
| Bar Graph | used to compare quantitative and qualitative data |
| Variables | are factors that can affect the results of an experiment |
| Independent Variable | is the variable that you change during an experiment - can only change 1 variable |
| Dependent Variable | is the variable that is the outcome of an experiment |
| Controlled Variables | is all other variables in an experiment that are kept the same |
| Vertical axis | Y (up and down) |
| Horizontal axis | X (side to side |
| Data Table | where you organize your collect data |
| Graphs | display collected data in picture form |
| Hypothesis | scientists make a prediction of the outcome of an experiment before they try the experiment |
| Which variable is placed in the IF part of a hypothesis? | IV = independent variable |
| Which variable is placed in the THEN part of a hypothesis? | DV = dependent variable |
| What does it mean to REJECT your hypothsis? | the statement is proven false |
| What does it mean to CONFIRM your hypothsis? | the statement is proven true |
| Why do scientists use experiments? | to answer questions they have about the world |
| What is a scientific question? | something that can be tested to gather information |
| Mr. Pullen wants to know your favorite color - Is this a testable questions??? | NO - it's an opinion |
| What is the average height of a 6th grader? - Is this a testable question? | YES - you can collect data |
| If you confirm or accept your hypothesis, you are.... | saying that your hypothesis is proven TRUE |
| If you deny or reject your hypothesis, you are .... | saying that your hypothesis is proven FALSE |
