| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Lava | Is magma that flows out onto Earths surface. |
| Igneous rocks | Form when lava or magma cools and minerals crysallize. |
| partial melting | Minerals melt at relatively low temperatures while other minerals remain solid. |
| Bowen's reaction series | Magma cools and crystallizes, minerals form in predictable patterns. |
| Fractional Crystallization | Similar to partial melting in that the compositions of magma can change. |
| Intrusive rock | Generally large enough to see without magnification. |
| Extrusive rock | Small and difficult to see without magnification. |
| Basaltic rock | Gabbro, dark-colored, have lower silica contents, and contain mostly plagioclase and pyroxene. |
| Granitic rock | Granite, are light colored, have high silica contents, and contian mostly quartz, potassium feldspar. |
| Texture | Refers to the size, shape, and distribution of the crytals or grains that make up a rock. |
| Porphyritic texture | Large, well formed crystals surrounded by finer grained crystals of the same mineral. |
| Vesicular texture | Spongy apperance. |
| Pegmatites | Ores of rare elements, such as lithium and beryllium. |
| Kimberlites | Diamond is found in this rock. |
