TermDefinition
Activation Energy the minimum quantity of energy that the reacting species must possess in order to undergo a specified reaction
Activation site the part of an enzyme that interacts with the substrate during catalysis.
Amino acid an organic compound containing both a carboxyl and an amino group
Carbohydrate a large group of organic compounds occurring in foods and living tissues and including sugars, starch, and cellulose. They contain hydrogen and oxygen in the same ratio as water and typically can be broken down to release energy in the animal body.
Conformation a symmetrical arrangement of the parts of a thing
dehydration synthesis a chemical reaction that builds up molecules by losing water molecules.
enzyme a substance produced by a living organism that acts as a catalyst to bring about a specific biochemical reaction.
Hydrogen bond a bond between two molecules resulting from an electrostatic attraction between a proton and a electron atom
Hydrolysis he chemical breakdown of a compound due to reaction with water
Lipid a class of organic compounds that are fatty acids
Lock & key machanism A model for enzyme-substrate interaction suggesting that the enzyme and the substrate possess specific complementary geometric shapes that fit exactly into one another.
Macromolocules molecule containing a very large number of atoms
monomer a molecule that can be bonded to other identical molecules to form a polymer
monosaccharide any of the class of sugars
nucleic acid a complex organic substance present in living cells
nucleotide they form the basic structural unit of nucleic acids such as DNA
organic molocuele An organic compound is any member of a large class of chemical compounds whose molecules contain carbon
polymer a substance that has a molecular structure consisting chiefly or entirely of a large number of similar units bonded together
Protien any of a class of nitrogenous organic compounds that consist of large molecules composed of one or more long chains of amino acids and are an essential part of all living organisms
substrate a substance or layer that underlies something, or on which some process occurs, in particular

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
