QuestionAnswer
What is an observation? Anything that can be stated using your senses
What are the 2 types of observations? Qualitative and quantitative
What is inference? An explanation for an observation you have made
What is the basis for inference? Past events or prior knowledge Can change when new observations are made
Example: the schools lawn is wet Inference: it rained last night
I or O? When I rang the doorbell, no one answered O
I or O? Those clouds look like it's going to rain I
What is the scientific method? An organized plan for gathering, organizing, and communicating information
What is the goal of the scientific method To solve a problem or better understand an observed event
How do you make an observation? Gather information through your 5 senses
What are repeatable observations? Known facts
What is the 1st step in making an observation? Combine your observations to form a question
What is the 2nd step in making an observation? Form a hypothesis
What is a hypothesis? A proposed answer to a question A hypothesis can NEVER be proven, only accepted or rejected A hypothesis must be testable
What is the 3rd step in making an observation? Test your hypothesis Use an experiment to test your hypothesis
What are the 2types of variables? Independent and dependent
Define independent variable The factor that causes a change in the experiment Can be increased or decreased Example: the speed with which you walk or run
Define dependent variable The factor that changes as a result of the independent variable Measurable variable (how wet you get)
How do you analyze your data? Through the analysis of data, does the gathered info support the hypothesis
If your hypothesis is supported what is the next step? More testing is always required Test the hypothesis with repeat experiments Prove it's validity
If your hypothesis is not supported what is the next step? Revise hypothesis, retest, and analyze again
How do you develop a theory? Through repeat experimentation if your hypothesis is true, you can develop a theory
Are theories ever proven? NO, theories become stronger if the facts continue to support them Example: evolution
What is a law? Repeated observations about patterns found in nature Accepted as fact Example: gravity
What is the formula of a water molecule? H2O
What makes a water molecule a neutral molecule? It has an equal # of electrons and protons
What is waters net charge? Zero
What kind of molecule is water? Polar molecule
Why is water called a polar molecule? Because the oxygen end acts negatively charged and the hydrogen end acts positively charged
Is one hydrogen bond weak or strong? One is weak, many are strong
How do hydrogen bonds form? Electromagnetive atom of a polar molecule and hydrogen
At sea level what temp does water boil? Freeze? 100*C 0*C
What happens to the boiling point of water at higher elevations where the atmospheric pressure is less? Boiling temp of water decreases at higher elevations
Where will it take longer for an egg to boil Mt Everest or Death Valley? Mt Everest
Name 5 properties of water that are important to life Cohesion, adhesion, high specific heat, high heat or vaporization, less dense as a solid
What is cohesion? Attraction between particles of the same substance
What is does cohesion produce when one water molecule attracts other water molecules? Surface tension
What is surface tension a measure of? How strong the water tension is
How does the film produced by surface tension help organisms? Allows insects to walk on the surface
What is adhesion? Attraction between two different substances
How does ADHESION differ from COHESION Adhesion attracts different substances Cohesion attracts the same
What type of action does adhesion produce? Capillary action as water is attracted to and pulled into a tube
What is transpiration? The process in plants that causes capillary action
How do plants absorb water? Though their roots and with capillary action or ADHESION to move water against gravity to the leaves
Name two things observed in nature that are a result of adhesion Spider webs Blades of grass
What is specific heat? The amount of heat needed to raise or lower 1gram of a substance 1*C
What is heat vaporization? Amount of energy to convert 1gram of a substance
What must happen for water to evaporate? Water must break its hydrogen bonds
What is waters heat of vaporization? 540*
How does water warm the earth Sun energy absorbed and held by vapor
Why does ice float in water? Ice is less dense
Which is more dense, ice or water? Water
