Science Unit 2

Unit 2 Flash cards

QuestionAnswer
1. What is Wegener’s theory and what supports it? =Continental Drift, and it is supported by the fact that the shapes of the continental coastlines fit as well as the same types of fossils and flora being found on different continents
2. What features are caused by the movement of tectonic plates? =Trenches, Mountians, Volcano,
3. Explain convection cells. =Pattern of the hotter material rising, and other cooler material sinking
4. Which part of the Earth’s interior is directly related to the diffraction of P waves? =The boundary between the lithosphere and the asthenosphere
5. What are the layers of the earth, the basic composition of each layer, and what material (from which layer) is directly related to volcanoes. =Crust, Mantle, Liquid core, Solid core, and mantle is directly related to volcanos
6. What are the different types of volcanoes and the features that affect them. =Lava domes, cinder cones, composite, Shield Volcanos
7. How is sulpher dioxide related to acid rain and volcanoes? =Sulpher Dioxide is release from the eruption of the volcano and into the atmosphere, and combines with water vapor in the atmosphere, and released as acid rain
8. What specific type of features do you find along a convergent boundary? =Mountains, Volcanoes, Trenches, seismic activity
a. continental-continental convergent boundary- Two continents pushing against each other
a. divergent boundary undersea- boundary that is pulling apart
a. oceanic-oceanic convergent boundary- (Trenches) two oceanic plates pushing against each other
b. oceanic-continental convergent boundary- (subduction). Oceanic butts up against a continental plate
10. What is the S-P interval of seismic waves? =The time between the primary and secondary waves
11. How do you calculate the earthquakes distance using the seismometer? =Find the difference between the start times then calculate the diffrence through a S-P wave interval chart
12. What is a hot spot? =Mantle Plumes, they are areas of hot, upwelling mantle
13. What is oceanic seafloor spreading? What evidence was used to confirm it? =It is a process that occurs at mid-ocean ridges, new oceanic crust is formed through volocanic activity and it slowly moves away from the ridge. This process also helps explains the continental drift.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
