chapter 7 vocal

QuestionAnswer
cell the basic structural and functional unit of all living organisms
cell theory one of the fundamental ideas of modern biology
plasma membrane special boundary that controls what enters and leaves the cell
organelles specialized structures that carry out specific cell functions
eukaryotic cells contain a nucleus and other organelles that are bound by membranes
nucleus central organelle that contains the cell's genetic material in the form of DNA.
prokaryotic cells cells without a nucleus or other membrane-bound organelles
selective permeability membrane allows some substance to pass through, but keeps others out
phospholipid bilayer two layers of phospholipids are arranged tail to tail
transport proteins their job is to move substances or waste materials through the plasma membrane
fluid mosaic model basis of the plasma membrane
cytoplasm environment inside the plasma membrane; semifluid material. jelly like
cytoskeleton supporting network of long thin protein fibers that form a framework for the cell and provide an anchor for the organelles inside the cells
ribosomes the organelles that help manufacture proteins
nucleolus ribosome production. inside the nucleus
endoplasmic reticulum membrane system. the surface for chemical activity. path way for transporting materials through out the cell.
golgi apparatus flattened stack of membranes that modifies, sorts, and packages proteins into sacs called vesicles.releases the product of the cell
vacuole sac used to store food, enzymes, and other materials
lysosomes vesicles that contain substances that digest excess or worn out organelles and food particles. digestion center.
centrioles organelles made out of microtubules that function during cell division in animal cells only
mitochondria converts food particles into usable energy, powerhouse of cell.
chloroplast organelles that capture light energy and convert it to chemical energy.plant food is made here.
cell wall thick, rigid mesh of fibers that surrounds the outside of the plasma membrane
cilia short numerous projections that look like hairs. used for movement
flagella longer and less numerous than cilia. used for movement
diffusion the next movement of particles from an area where there are many particles of the substance
dynamic equilibrium continuous movement but no overall change
facilitated diffusion uses transport proteins to move other ions and small molecules across the plasma membrane
osmosis diffusion of water across a selectively permeable membrane
isotonic solution a solution having the same osmotic pressure as blood. Iso means equal.
hypotonic solution (hypo=under) any solution with a lower salt concentration than normal body cells so that water flows into the cells by osmosis
hypertonic solution (hyper=above) any solution with a higher salt concentration than normal body cells so that the water is drawn out of the cells by osmosis;
active transport plasma membrane against concentration
endocytosis the process by which a cells surrounds a substance in the outside environment

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
