Geography

TermDefinition
Latitude Imaginary lines that circle the Earth parallel to the Equator. (Left to Right)
Longitude Imaginary lines that run north and south from the North Pole to the South Pole. (Up and Down)
Parallels Another name for lines of latitude. Lines that run left to right around the world.
Meridians Another name for lines of longitude. Lines that run up and down around the world.
Equator The parallel that lies half way between the North and South poles. It is located at zero degrees. Divides the Earth into Northern and Southern hemipheres.
Prime Meridian Imaginary line that runs from pole to pole that divides the Earth into Eastern and Western hemispheres at zero degrees. Runs through Greenwich, England.
