Chapter 3

TermDefinition
Ecology The scientific study of interactions among organisms and between organisms and their environment or surroundings.
Bioshphere Contains the combined portions of the planet in which all of life exists, including, land, water and air, or atmosphere.
Species A group of organisms so similar to one another that they can breed and produce fertile offspring.
Populations Groups of individuals that belong to the same species and live in the same area.
Community Assemblages of different populations that live together in a defined area.
Ecosystem A collection of all the organisms that live in a particular place, together with their non-living, or physical environment.
Biome A group of ecosystems that have the same climate and similar dominate communities.
Autotroph an organism that is able to form nutritional organic substances from simple inorganic substances such as carbon dioxide.
Photosynthesis the process by which green plants and some other organisms use sunlight to synthesize foods from carbon dioxide and water.
Chemosynthesis the synthesis of organic compounds by bacteria or other living organisms using energy derived from reactions involving inorganic chemicals.
Consumer Organisms that rely on other organisms for their energy and food supply.
Carnivore Eat other animals
Detritivore Feed on plant and dead animal remains and other dead matter.
Food Chain A series of steps in which organisms transfer energy by eating and being eaten.
Trophic Level Each step in a food web of food chain
Ecological Pyramid A diagram that shows the relative amounts of energy pr matter contained within each trophic level in a food chain or food web.
Producer Make their own food
Heterotroph Organisms that rely on other organisms for their energy and food supply.
Herbivore Eat only plants
Omnivore Eat both plants and animals
Decomposer Break down organic matter
Food Web Links all the food chains in an ecosystem together.
Biomass The total amount of living tissue within a given trophic level.
Biogeochemical Cycle Connects biological, geological, and chemical aspects of the biosphere.
Evapration The process by which water changes from liquid form to an atmospheric gas.
Transpiration Water can enter the atmosphere by evaporating from the laves of plants.
Nutrient All of the chemical substances that an organism needs to sustain life.
Denitrification A process that releases nitrogen into the atmosphere once again
Primary Productivity The rate at which organic matter is created by producers.
Limiting Nutrient When an ecosystem is limited by a single nutrient that is scarce or cycles very slowly
Algal Bloom An immediate increase in the amount of algae and other producers.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
