Chapter 3
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Ecology | The scientific study of interactions among organisms and between organisms and their environment or surroundings. |
| Bioshphere | Contains the combined portions of the planet in which all of life exists, including, land, water and air, or atmosphere. |
| Species | A group of organisms so similar to one another that they can breed and produce fertile offspring. |
| Populations | Groups of individuals that belong to the same species and live in the same area. |
| Community | Assemblages of different populations that live together in a defined area. |
| Ecosystem | A collection of all the organisms that live in a particular place, together with their non-living, or physical environment. |
| Biome | A group of ecosystems that have the same climate and similar dominate communities. |
| Autotroph | an organism that is able to form nutritional organic substances from simple inorganic substances such as carbon dioxide. |
| Photosynthesis | the process by which green plants and some other organisms use sunlight to synthesize foods from carbon dioxide and water. |
| Chemosynthesis | the synthesis of organic compounds by bacteria or other living organisms using energy derived from reactions involving inorganic chemicals. |
| Consumer | Organisms that rely on other organisms for their energy and food supply. |
| Carnivore | Eat other animals |
| Detritivore | Feed on plant and dead animal remains and other dead matter. |
| Food Chain | A series of steps in which organisms transfer energy by eating and being eaten. |
| Trophic Level | Each step in a food web of food chain |
| Ecological Pyramid | A diagram that shows the relative amounts of energy pr matter contained within each trophic level in a food chain or food web. |
| Producer | Make their own food |
| Heterotroph | Organisms that rely on other organisms for their energy and food supply. |
| Herbivore | Eat only plants |
| Omnivore | Eat both plants and animals |
| Decomposer | Break down organic matter |
| Food Web | Links all the food chains in an ecosystem together. |
| Biomass | The total amount of living tissue within a given trophic level. |
| Biogeochemical Cycle | Connects biological, geological, and chemical aspects of the biosphere. |
| Evapration | The process by which water changes from liquid form to an atmospheric gas. |
| Transpiration | Water can enter the atmosphere by evaporating from the laves of plants. |
| Nutrient | All of the chemical substances that an organism needs to sustain life. |
| Denitrification | A process that releases nitrogen into the atmosphere once again |
| Primary Productivity | The rate at which organic matter is created by producers. |
| Limiting Nutrient | When an ecosystem is limited by a single nutrient that is scarce or cycles very slowly |
| Algal Bloom | An immediate increase in the amount of algae and other producers. |
