| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Ecology | Scientific study of interactions among organisms and between organisms and their environment, or surroundings. |
| Biosphere | contains the combined portions of the planet. |
| Species | a group of organisms so similar to one another that they can breed and produce fertile offspring. |
| Populations | groups of individuals that belong to the same species and live in the same area. |
| Communities | assemblages of different populations that live together in a defined area. |
| Ecosystem | a collection of all the organisms that live in a particular place. |
| Biome | a group of ecosystems that have the same climate and similar dominant communities. |
| Autotrophs | use energy from the environment to fuel the assembly of simple inorganic compounds into complex organic molecules. |
| Producers | they make their own food, autotrophs, like the kelp. |
| Photosynthesis | autotrophs use light energy to power chemical reactions that convert carbon dioxide and water into oxygen and energy-rich carbohydrates such as sugars and starches. |
| Chemosythesis | this process is performed by several types of bacteria. |
| Heterotrophs | organisms that rely on other organisms for their energy and food supply. they are also called consumers. |
| Consumers | heterotrphs. |
| Herbivores | obtain energy by eating only plants. |
| Carnivores | eat animals. |
| Omnivores | humans, bears, crows, and others |
| Detritivores | such as mites, earthworms, snails, and crabs, feed on plant and animal remains and other dead matter, collectively called detritus. |
| Decomposers | breaks down organic matter. |
| Food chain | a series of steps in which organisms transfer energy by eating and being eaten. |
| Food web | links all the food chains in an ecosystem. |
| Trophic level | each step in a food chain or food wen is a trophic level. |
| Ecological pyramid | is a diagram that shows the relative amounts of energy or matter contained within each trophic level in a food chain or food web. |
| Biomass | is usually expressed in terms of grams of organic matter per unit area. |
| Biogeochemical cycles | In ecology and Earth science, a biogeochemical cycle or nutrient cycle is a pathway by which a chemical element or molecule moves through both biotic and abiotic. |
| Evaporation | the process by which water changes from liquid form to an atmospheric gas. |
