The McFuzzly Stack

Mr. McFuzzle's McFuzzly Fuzzle-Stack

TermDefinition
ecology the scientific study of interactions among organisms and between organisms and their environment
biosphere the combined portions of the planet in which all life exists
species a group of organisms so similar to one another that they can breed and produce fertile offspring
population groups of individuals that belong in the same species that are in the same area
community assemblages of different populations that live together in a defined area
ecosystem a collection of all the organisms that live in a particular place together with their nonliving environment
biome a group of ecosystems that have the same climate and similar dominant communities
autotroph organisms that capture energy from sunlight or chemicals and use that energy to produce food
producer organisms that capture energy from sunlight or chemicals and use that energy to produce food
photosynthesis the process where light, carbon dioxide, and water is converted into oxygen and glucose to produce energy
chemosynthesis the process in which chemical energy is used to produce carbohydrates
heterotroph organisms that rely on other organisms for their energy and food supply
consumer organisms that rely on other organisms for their energy and food supply
herbivore organisms that only obtain energy through eating plants
carnivore organisms that only obtain energy through eating animals
omnivore organisms that obtain energy through eating both plants and animals
detritivore organisms that only obtain energy through eating the remains of plants, animals, and other dead matter
decomposer organisms that only obtain energy through eating the remains of plants, animals, and other dead matter
food chain a series of steps in which organisms transfer energy by eating and being eaten
food web a link of multiple food chains within an ecosystem
trophic level an individual step within a food chain or food web
ecological pyramid a diagram that shows the relative amounts of energy or matter contained within each trophic level in a food chain or food web
biomass the total amount of living tissue within a given trophic level
biogeochemical cycle elements, chemical compounds, and other forms of matter that are passed from one organism to another
evaporation the process by which water changes from liquid into atmsopheric gas
transpiration the process by which water evaporates from leaves
nutrient the chemical substances that an organism needs to sustain life
nitrogen fixation the process that converts nitrogen gas into ammonia
denitrification the process that converts nitrates into nitrogen gas
primary productivity the rate at which organic matter is created by producers
limiting nutrient a nutrient that is scarce within an ecosystem
algal bloom when an aquatic ecosystem receives a large amount of a limiting nutrient and causes an immediate increase in algae and other producers

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
