| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Ecology | The branch of biology that deals with the relations of organism to one another and their physical surroundings. |
| Biosphere | The regions of the surface, atmosphere, and hydrosphere of the earth. |
| Species | A group of living organisms consisting of similar individuals capable of exchanging genes or interbreeding. |
| Population | A particular section, group, or type of people or animals living in an area or country. |
| Community | A group of people living the same place or having a particular characteristics in common. |
| Ecosystem | A biological community of interacting organisms and their physical environment. |
| Biome | A large naturally occurring community of flora and fauna occupying a major habitat |
| Autotroph | An organism that is able to form nutritional organic substances from simple inorganic substances such as carbon dioxide. |
| Producer | An organism that creates its own food. |
| Photosynthesis | The process by which green plants and some other organisms use sunlight to synthesize foods from carbon dioxide and water. |
| Chemo synthesis | The synthesis of organic compounds by bacteria or other living organisms using energy derived from reactions involving inorganic chemicals, typically in the absence of sunlight |
| Heterotroph | An organism deriving its nutritional requirements from complex organic substances. |
| Consumer | A person who purchases goods and services for personal use. |
| Herbivore | An animal that feeds on plants. |
| Carnivore | An animal that feeds on flesh. |
| Omnivore | An animal or person that eats food of both plant and animal origin. |
| Detritivore | An animal that feeds on dead organic material. |
| Decomposer | An organism that decomposes organic material. |
| Food Chain | A hierarchical series of organisms each dependent on the next as a source of food. |
| Food Web | A system of interlocking and interdependent food chains. |
| Trophic Level | Each of several hierarchical levels in an ecosystem, comprising organisms that share the same function in the food chain. |
| Ecological Pyramid | An ecological pyramid is a graphical representation designed to show the biomass or biomass productivity at each trophic level in a given ecosystem. |
| Biomass | The total mass of organisms in a given area or volume. |
| Biogeochemical cycle | In ecology and Earth science, a biogeochemical cycle or nutrient cycle is a pathway by which chemical element or molecule movers through both biotic an abiotic compartments of Earth. |
| Evaporation | Vaporization, the process of becoming a vapor. |
| Transpiration | The passage of gases through fine tubes because of differences in pressure or temperature |
| Nutrient | A substance that provides nourishment essential for growth and the maintenance of life. |
| Nitrogen fixation | The chemical processes by which atmospheric nitrogen is assimilated into organic compounds. |
| Denitrification | The removal of nitrogen. |
| Primary Productivity | Primary production is the production of organic compounds from atmospheric or aquatic carbon dioxide. |
| Limiting nutrient | A limiting factor or limiting resource is a factor that controls a process, such as organism growth. |
| Algal Bloom | A delicate powdery surface deposit on certain fresh fruits, leaves, or stems. |
