Scientific Definitions

TermDefinition
experiment This is the organized process used to test a hypothesis.
hypothesis This is an educated guess about the solution to a problem.
data This refers to the observation and measurements recorded during an experiment.
variable This is a factor that changes in an experiment. Proper procedure calls for testing only one of these at a time.
theory This is a set of statements or ideas that explain a group of facts or phenomena.
conclusion This is the judgement based on the results of an experiment.
control This is an individual or a standard used to check or verify the results of an experiment.
procedure This refers to the series of steps taken in order to carry out an experiment.
