minerals

mineral A naturally-occurring, inorganic solid that has a crystal structure and a definite chemical composition.
streak The color of a mineral’s powder.
luster The way a mineral reflects light from its surface.
Density the mass in a given space, or mass per unit volume
Friedrich Mohs invented a test to describe the hardness of minerals
Moh's hardness scale this scale ranks ten minerals from softest to hardest
cleavage A mineral that splits easily along flat surfaces
fracture describes how a mineral looks when it breaks apart in an irregular way
fluorescence A property where minerals that glow under ultraviolet light.
inorganic the mineral cannot form from materials that were once part of a living thing
crystal The repeating pattern of a mineral’s particles that forms a solid.
Magma molten material from inside Earth that hardens to form rock
lava magma that reaches the surface
solution a mixture in which one substance is dissolved in another
vein a narrow channel or slab of a mineral that is different from the surrounding rock
crystallization the process by which atoms are arranged to form a material with a crystal structure
geode a rounded, hollow rock that is often lined with mineral crystals
ore A rock that contains a metal or other useful mineral that can be mined and sold at a profit
Prospecting anyone who searches, or prospects, for an ore deposit
Mining geologist’s map of an ore deposit helps miners decide how to remove the ore from the ground
Smelting an ore is mixed with other substances and then melted to separate the useful metal from other elements the ore contains
alloy a solid mixture of two or more elements, at least one of which is a metal
gemstone a hard, colorful mineral that has a brilliant or glassy luster.
