What makes a bird a bird? Feathers--no other animals have feathers
In class we learned how birds are classified. Please know this info. KINGDOM--Animalia; PHYLUM--Chordata; CLASS--Aves
Birds are warm-blooded animals. What does this mean? Warm-blooded animals are able to regulate their body temperatures no matter what the temperature around them is.
What is an ornithologist? A person who studies birds as a job
What is a birder? A person who studies birds for fun
What is it called when birds move from one habitat to another for different seasons (remember we talked about flying south for the winter)? Migrate
What are field marks? The little differences that separate one bird from another, such as color, shape or stripes.
What is a wingbar? A strip or band of color that crosses the bird's wing horizontally.
What is the top of the bird's head called? The crown
What is a tuft of feathers on the top of a bird's head or crown called? A crest
What are passerines? More than half of all birds are in this group. They have 3 toes that point forward & 1 toe that points backward to help them perch on branches. They all sing songs & the babies are born without feathers, blind and totally dependent on parents.
Are all birds the same size? No, they can range in size from just a couple of inches to over 2 feet tall.
Do all birds live in the same type of habitat? No, some birds, like ducks, live in and near water, while other birds, like road runners, enjoy large flat areas such as deserts,and cardinals enjoy areas with lots of trees.
What is the bird's voice box called? Syrinx (pronounced sihr'inks)
What is the difference between a bird call and a bird song? A bird call is a single sound or note while a bird song is a series of sounds or notes that have a pattern.
Birds benefit us by eating lots of what? Insects
What is bird banding used for? To help us learn about where the bird goes, how long it lives, and what its habits are.
