QuestionAnswer
Prokaryote any cellular organism that has no nuclear membrane, no organelles in the cytoplasm except ribosomes, and has its genetic material in the form of single continuous strands forming coils or loops
Eukaryote any organism having as its fundamental structural unit a cell type that contains specialized organelles in the cytoplasm, a membrane-bound nucleus enclosing genetic material organized into chromosomes
Unicellular having or consisting of a single cell
Multicellular composed of several or many cells
Cell Theory a basic tenet of modern biology, first stated by Matthias Schleiden and Theodor Schwann in 1838–39, that cells are the basic units of structure and function in living organisms.
Cell Wall the definite boundary or wall that is part of the outer structure of certain cells, as a plant cell.
Cell Membrane the semipermeable membrane enclosing the cytoplasm of a cell.
Organelle a specialized part of a cell having some specific function; a cell organ
Cytoplasm the cell substance between the cell membrane and the nucleus, containing the cytosol, organelles, cytoskeleton, and various particles
Nucleus a specialized, usually spherical mass of protoplasm encased in a double membrane, and found in most living eukaryotic cells, directing their growth, metabolism, and reproduction, and functioning in the transmission of genic characters.
Nucleolus a conspicuous, rounded body within the nucleus of a cell which creates ribosomes
Mitochondria an organelle in the cytoplasm of cells that functions in energy production
Vacuole a membrane-bound cavity within a cell, often containing a watery liquid or secretion under cell.
Chloroplast a plastid containing chlorophyll
Ribosome a tiny, somewhat mitten-shaped organelle occurring in great numbers in the cell cytoplasm either freely, in small clusters, or attached to the outer surfaces of endoplasmic reticula, and functioning as the site of protein manufacture
Smooth ER a network of tubular membranes within the cytoplasm of the cell
Rough ER a network of tubular membranes within the cytoplasm of the cell
Golgi Body studded with ribosomes involved in the transport of materials.
Lysosome a cell organelle containing enzymes that digest particles and that disintegrate the cell after its death
Turgor Pressure Also called: hydrostatic pressure the pressure exerted on a plant cell wall by water passing into the cell by osmosis
Endocrine System The bodily system that consists of the endocrine glands and the hormones that they secrete.
Immune System Fights of diseases with white blood cells
Lymphatic System System of vessels which help the veins retain water
Homozygous pure breed, of the same alleles
Heterozygous hybrid, different allels

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
