| endoskeleton | supportive framework of bones and/or cartilage that muscles are attached to and that protects organs |
| cartilage | tough, flexible tissue that makes up part or all of an endoskeleton |
| vertebrae | backbones that are joined by cartilage and protect a spinal cord |
| ectotherm | animal whose internal temperature changes with the temperature of its environment |
| endotherm | animal with a nearly constant internal temperature |
| hibernation | adaptation for winter survival in which an animal's activity is greatly reduced, its body temperature drops, and body processes slow down |
| estivation | inactivity in hot, dry months |
| innate behavior | behavior that an organism is born with and does not have to learn |
| reflex | simple innate behavior that is an automatic response and does not involve a message to the brain |
| instinct | complex innate behaviors that can take a long time to complete |
| imprinting | when an animal forms an attachment to another animal after birth or hatching |
| conditioning | occurs when a response to a stimulus becomes associated with another stimulus |
| migration | instinctive seasonal movement to find food or to reproduce |
