The dynamic earth

the geosphere, atmosphere, hydrosphere, and biosphere

TermDefinition
Geosphere the solid part of the earth that consists of all rock, as well as the soils and loose rocks on Earth's surface
crust Earth's thin outer layer; is composed almost entirely of light elements
mantle layer beneath the crust, makes up 64% of the mass of the Earth
lithosphere Earth's outer layer
asthenosphere layer beneath the lithosphere
tectonic plates the rigid, outermost layer of the earth is divided into pieces
erosion the removal and transport of surface material
atmosphere Earth is surrounded by a mixture of gases
troposhere extends to about 18 km above Earth's surface
stratosphere extends from about 18 km to an altitude of about 50 km
Ozone is a molecule made p of three oxygen atoms
radiation transfer of energy across space and in the atmosphere
conduction flow of heat from a warmer object to a colder object when the objects are placed in direct physical contact
convection transfer of heat by air currents
greenhouse effect gases trap heat near the earth
water cycle movement of water into the air, onto land, and the back to water sources
evaporation process by which liquid water is heated by sun and then rises up into the atmosphere as water vapor
condensation water vapor forms water droplets on dust particle
precipitation larger droplets fall from clouds as rain in a process
salinity ocean water is the concentration of all the dissolved salts it contains
fresh water a little more than 3 % of all the water on earth
