The dynamic earth
the geosphere, atmosphere, hydrosphere, and biosphere
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Geosphere | the solid part of the earth that consists of all rock, as well as the soils and loose rocks on Earth's surface |
| crust | Earth's thin outer layer; is composed almost entirely of light elements |
| mantle | layer beneath the crust, makes up 64% of the mass of the Earth |
| lithosphere | Earth's outer layer |
| asthenosphere | layer beneath the lithosphere |
| tectonic plates | the rigid, outermost layer of the earth is divided into pieces |
| erosion | the removal and transport of surface material |
| atmosphere | Earth is surrounded by a mixture of gases |
| troposhere | extends to about 18 km above Earth's surface |
| stratosphere | extends from about 18 km to an altitude of about 50 km |
| Ozone | is a molecule made p of three oxygen atoms |
| radiation | transfer of energy across space and in the atmosphere |
| conduction | flow of heat from a warmer object to a colder object when the objects are placed in direct physical contact |
| convection | transfer of heat by air currents |
| greenhouse effect | gases trap heat near the earth |
| water cycle | movement of water into the air, onto land, and the back to water sources |
| evaporation | process by which liquid water is heated by sun and then rises up into the atmosphere as water vapor |
| condensation | water vapor forms water droplets on dust particle |
| precipitation | larger droplets fall from clouds as rain in a process |
| salinity | ocean water is the concentration of all the dissolved salts it contains |
| fresh water | a little more than 3 % of all the water on earth |
| biosphere | is the narrow layer around Earth's surface in which life can existg |
