| tectonic plates | the pieces that the lithosphere is divided into |
| erosion | the removal and transport of surface material |
| atmosphere | a mixture of gases the earth is surrounded by |
| troposphere | the atmospheric layer nearest earths surface |
| stratosphere | above the trophosphere |
| ozone | a molecule made up of three oxygen atoms |
| radiation | transfer of energy across space and in the atmospher |
| conduction | flow of heat by air currents |
| convection | transfer of heat by air currents |
| greenhouse effect | the process in which gases trap heat near the earth |
| water cycle | continuous movement of water into he air, onto land, and then back to water sources |
| evaporation | the process by which liquid water is heated by the sun and then rises into the atmosphere as water vapor |
| condensation | water vapor forms water droplets on dust particles |
| precipitation | larger droplets fall from clouds as rain |
| salinity | concentration of all the dissolved salts in contains |
| fresh water | a little more than 3 percent of all the water on earth |
| biosphere | the narrow layer around earths surface in which life can exist |
