| geosphere | all rock, soils, and looserock |

| crust | composed of light elements |
| mantle | layer beneath the crust |
| core | earth's inner most layer |
| lithosphere | earth's outer layer |
| asthenosphere | layer beneath the lithosphere |
| tectonic plates | outermost layer |
| erosion | removial and transport of materials |
| atmosphere | mixture of gases |
| troposphere | almost all of the weather occurs in this layer |
| stratosphere | above the troposphere |
| ozone | molecule made up of three oxygen atoms |
| radiation | transfer of energy across space and in the atmosphere |
| conduction | the flow of heat from a warmer object to a colder object when the objects are placed in direct physical contact |
| convection | the transfer of heat by air currents |
| greenhouse effect | gases trap heat ner the earth |
| water cycle | the continous movement of water into the air, onto land, and then back to water sources |
| evaporation | the process by which liquid water is heated by the sun and then rises into the atmosphere as water vapor |
| condensation | water vapor forms water droplets on dust particles |
| precipitation | larger droplets fall from clouds as rain |
| salinity | the concentration of all the dissolved salts it contains |
| fresh water | a little more than three precent of all the water on earth |
| biosphere | the narrow layer around eath's surface in which life can exist |
