Dynamic Earth

chapter 3 vocabulary

TermDefinition
Geosphere mostly solid, rocky part of the earth. extends from the center of the core to the surface of the crust
Crust thin and solid outermost layer of the earth above the mantle
Mantle layer of rock between the earths crust and core
Core central part of the earth below the mantle, also the center of the sun.
Lithosphere solid, outer layer of the earth that cosists of the crust and the rigid upper part of the mantle
Asthenosphere solid, plastic layer of the mantle beneath the lithosphere. made of mantle rock that flows very slowly which allows tectonic plates to move on top of it
Tectonic Plate block of lithosphere that consists of the crust and the rigid outermost part of the mantle
Erosion process in which materials of the earths surface are loosened, dissolved, or worn away and transported from one place to another by natural agent, such as wind, ice, water, or gravity
Atmosphere mixture of gases that surrounds a planet, such as earth
Troposphere lowest layer of the atmosphere in which temp. drops ata constant rate as altitiude increases. part of atmopshere where weather conditions exist.
Stratosphere layer of atmosphere that lays between thr troposhere and the mesosphere and in which temp. increases as altitude increases, contains the ozone layer
Ozone gas molecule that is made up of three oxygen atoms.
Radiation energy that is transferred as electromagnetic waves such as visible light and infrared waves
Conduction transfer of energy as heat through a material
Convection movement of matter due to differences in density that are caused by temp.variations can result in the transfer of energy as heat
Greenhouse Effect warming of the surface and lower atmosphere of earth that occurs when carbon dioxide ,water vapor, and other gases in the air absorb and reradiate infrared radtiation
Water Cycle continuious movement of water between the atmosphere the land and the oceans
Evaporation change of state from a liquid to a gas
Condensation change of state from a gas to a liquid
Precipitation any form of water that falls to the earths surface from the clouds. rain snow sleet hail
Salinity measure of the amount of dissolved salts in a given amount of liquid.
Fresh Water water that contains insignificant amounts of salts, as in rivers and lakes
Biosphere part of earth where life exists.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
