Cells
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Cell Theory | Cells are the basic units of all living things; all living things are made of cells; all cells are made of pre-existing cells. |
| Cell Wall | Rigid structure which surrounds plant cells and provides support. |
| Cytoplasm | Gel-like liquid that fills the cell; gives structure and suspends the organelles. |
| Cell Membrane | Surrounds the cytoplasm of the plant and animal cell; it regulates what can enter and leave the cell. |
| Nucleus | Control center of the cell; it stores the genetic code in its DNA. |
| Mitochondria | Powerhouse of the cell; it releases energy. |
| Vacuole | Storage unit for water, nutrients and wastes. The vacuole in the plant cell is much larger than in the animal cell. |
| Chloroplast | Found only in plant cells it contains chlorophyll which through the process of photosynthesis converts solar energy into chemical energy in the form of glucose (sugar). |
| Unicellular | One-celled living organisms. |
| Multicellular | Many celled living organisms. |
| Prokaryote | Cells without a nucleus. |
| Eukaryote | Cells with a nucleus. |
| Ribosomes | Organelle that makes proteins for the cell. |
| Cell | The basic unit of structure and function in living things. |
| Tissues | A group of similar cells that work together to perform a specific function. |
| Organs | A group of different tissues that work together to perform a complex function. |
| Organ System | A group of organs that work together to perform a complex function. |
| Circulatory System | Transports oxygen, nutrients and other needed materials to cells; transports wastes and carbon dioxide away from cells. |
| Respiratory System | Exchanges oxygen and carbon dioxide between the body and the external environment. |
| Excretory System | Removes wastes produced by the body. |
| Integumentary System | Provides a barrier between the body and the external environment. |
| Endocrine System | Secretes hormones that regulate body functions. |
| Immune System | Protects against disease. |
| Turgor Pressure | Pressure exerted on the cell wall of a plant cell from the water contained in the vacuole. |
| Homozygous | Pair of identical alleles. |
| Heterozygous | Pair of alleles where one is dominant and the other recessive. |
