Scientific Method

A scientific process

QuestionAnswer
prediction Making an educated guess.
classify Group by similer characteristics
qualitative observation uses our senses to gather information
quantitative observation measure to get information
inference give an explanation for what you observed
communication tell others what you know
hypothesis educated guess
observational investigation lab (investigation)when changes are being observerved
experimental investigation lab (investigation) when hypothesis is being tested
independent variable change the experimenter makes in an experiment. Also known as the manipulated variable. "I" change this first
dependent variable change that responds to the "IV". this change is the data collected or data measured to determine if the "IV" has an effect. This change happens after "IV".
constant The factors that must stay the same in order for the experiment to be a fair test. The experimenter may only change one variable- the "IV"- all other factors must stay the same.
control standard of comparison
fair test an experiment that changes only one factor
repeated trials Completing an experiment many times. This is done to make the experiment a fair test.
