Scientific Method

The Scientific Method/Process

TermDefinition
Problem A question you are trying to answer
Materials A "list" of things you will need to perform your experiment or investigation
Method A numbered list of steps to follow
Hypothesis A testable explanation predicting the outcome of your experiment (it must be in "If ... then..." statement)
Variables things that may cause a change in the outcome of an experiment
Independent Variable what we are testing in the experiment
Dependent Variable what will happen or be tested in the experiment
Constant things you do DO NOT change in the experiment
Control Group something that does not receive the receive the Independent Variable; its the original thing your set aside for comparison when teh experiment is complete.
Data and Observations A chart or table you design to record and display your observations or information found during the experiment.
Conclusions An answer to your question, or the results of your experiment summarized in paragraph form.
