Map Identification
Geography/Map Vocabulary (Grade 6)
| Term | Definition |

| Latitude | the angular distance north or south from the equator of a point on the earth's surface, measured on the meridian of the point. |
| Longitude | angular distance east or west on the earth's surface, measured by the angle contained between the meridian of a particular place and some prime meridian. |
| Equator | the great circle of the earth that is equidistant from the North Pole and South Pole. Runs from east to west. |
| Elevation | the altitude (height) of a place above sea level or ground level. |
| Hemisphere | half of the globe. |
| Cardinal Directions | directions of north, east, south, and west. |
| Intermediate Directions | directions of northeast, northwest, southeast and southwest. |
| Legend | a table on a map, chart, or the like, listing and explaining the symbols used (the key) |
| Physical Map | map that includes a depiction of the identifiable landmarks |
| Political Map | a representation of a country's territories, map that include boundaries, and capital(s). (Cities, towns, counties) |
| Prime Meridian | the 0° meridian from which the other meridians or lines of longitude are calculated. Runs from north to south. |
| Scale | a graduated line representing proportionate size. |
