Weather Terms Unit 2

QuestionAnswer
weather what the troposphere is like at any given time and place
climate the average weather conditions for a specific part of the world
hydrological cycle the continuous movement of water on Earth
condensation water vapor turning into a liquid to create clouds
precipitation any form of water particles (rain, snow, sleet, and hail) that falls from the atmosphere to the ground
evaporation the changing of a liquid to a vapor due to heat
runoff water flowing on the surface of the land and goes into rivers and streams
groundwater (infiltration) water that soaks into the ground
transpiration the loss of water through a plant's leaves into the atmosphere
air pressure the force put on a given area by the weight of the air around it
tornado a violent whirling wind that moves across the ground in a narrow path
hurricane a very large, swirling storm; the lower the pressure the stronger the storm; center is called the eye; warm ocean water strengthens the storm
blizzard storm with very low temperatures (<20 degrees Fahrenheit) and winds that are > 35 mph. Large amounts of snowfall decrease visibility.
thunderstorm the most common severe storm, formed in cumulonimbus clouds
cirrus clouds a high-altitude cloud made of ice crystals; thin and wispy
stratus clouds a cloud that forms a blanket-like layer across the sky
cumulus a puffy cloud that appears to rise up from a flat base; fair weather cloud
cumulonimbus clouds large thunderstorm clouds; often called thunderheads
wind vane a device that indicates wind direction
rain gauge a cylinder tube that measures rainfall
anemometer an instrument that measures wind speed
barometer a device for measuring air pressure
thermometer an instrument used to measure air temperature
hygrometer a device used to measure humidity
ruler/yardstick an instrument used to measure snowfall
humidity the amount of water vapor in the air
global warming average temperatures in Earth's atmosphere have increased over time
cold front a boundary where cold air moves in under a mass of warm air
warm front a boundary where warm air moves in over a mass of cold air
stationary front an unmoving front where a cold air mass and a warm air mass meet
front a boundary between two air masses with different temperatures
meteorologist a person who studies weather
weather balloon carries weather instruments high into the atmosphere to collect weather information
weather radar a device used to locate precipitation, calculate its motion and intensity
weather satellite a device that revolves around the Earth and detects and reports weather patterns on the Earth's surface
forecast a prediction of what weather will be in the future
convection the flow of energy caused by the movement of air
atmosphere a blanket of gases that surrounds Earth
troposphere the layer closest to Earth's surface; where most weather occurs
wind air that moves horizontally
westerlies winds in the US that typically blow from the west to the east
weather station an observation post where weather data is observed and recorded
stratosphere where the ozone layer is located; airplanes sometime travel here to avoid bad weather
thermosphere the warmest layer, reaches over 2000 degrees Fahrenheit
mesosphere the middle layer; meteors are seen here
exosphere the highest layer of the atmosphere; extends to outer space
fall If the Northern Hemisphere is experiencing spring, the Southern Hemisphere is experiencing ________.
winter If the Northern Hemisphere is experiencing summer, the Southern Hemisphere is experiencing ________.
cold front I am a fast moving front which brings heavy precipitation.
warm front I am a slow moving front which brings light precipitation.
precipitation All fronts (warm, cold, and stationary) bring _______________ to an area.
