Flora-SOL Review C

SOL Review C Meteorology

QuestionAnswer
low a pressure system in which air is rising with clouds and precipitation forming, a cyclone
high a pressure system with dense, sinking air which is associated with pleasant weather, pressure is highest in the center, an anticyclone
cloud forms when air rises, cools and water vapor starts condensing in the sky
cumulonimbus a thunderstorm cloud, dark, puffy and tall
wind created when air moves from an area of high pressure toward an area of low pressure
tornado a whirling column of air over land, occurs in spring, a low pressure center
hurricane a large, rotating low pressure system which gets its energy from warm ocean water
warm the type of front or boundary between a warm air mass and the cold air mass it is replacing, creates light rain
cold the type of front or boundary in which cold air meets warm air it is replacing which causes storms and heavy rain
condensation nuclei a tiny piece of dust or pollution on which water vapor condenses to form clouds
nitrogen this gas makes up 78% of our atmosphere
oxygen this gas makes up 21% of our atmosphere
carbon dioxide this gas and water vapor are the two main greenhouse gases
sling psychrometer an instrument used with a dew-point temperature chart to determine the dew point temperature
dew point temperature the temperature to which the air must be cooled to become saturated
troposphere the lowest layer of atmosphere where most weather occurs
air pressure the effect of the weight of the atmosphere pressing down on a surface area, measured with a barometer
humidity the measure of the water vapor in the air
relative humidity the comparison of how much moisture is in the air to how much moisture the air can hold
land breeze the breeze that blows at night from the land to the sea (warmer air over water = low pressure area)
sea breeze the breeze that blows during the day from the sea to the land (low pressure area from warm air rising)
Coriolis Effect curving of winds, ocean currents caused by Earth's rotation on its axis
front the leading edge of an air mass

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
