The Scientific Method/Process

TermDefinition
Problem A question you are trying to answer
Materials A "list" of thing you will need to perform your experiment or investigation
Method A numbered list of steps to follow
Hypothesis A testable explanation predicting the outcome of your experiment (it must be an "If..., then ..." statement)
Variables Things that may cause a change in the outcome of an experiment
Independent Variable What we are testing in the experiment
Dependent Variable What will happen or be tested in the experiment
Constant Things you DO NOT change in the experiment
Control Group Something that does not receive the Independent Variable; its the original thing you set aside for comparison when the experiment is complete
Data & Observation A chart or table you design to record and display your observations or information found during the experiment
Conclusion An answer to your question, or the results of your experiment summarized in paragraph form
