Scientific Method

The Scientific Method/Process

TermDefinition
Problem A question your are trying to answer
Materials A "LIST" of things you will need to perform your experiment
Method A numbered list of steps to follow
Hypothesis A testable explanation predicting the outcome of your experiment (must be an "If . . . , then . . ." statement)
Variables Things that may cause a change in the outcome of an experiment
Independent Variables What "I" am testing in the experiment.
Dependent Variable What will happen or be tested in the experiment
Constant Things you DO NOT change in the experiment (they do the same thing they have always done)
Control Group Something that does not receive the Independent Variable; the original thing that you set aside for comparison
Data & Observations A chart or table you design to record and display your observations or information found during the experiment
Conclusions An answer to your question, or the results of your experiment summarized in paragraph form.
