Cell Processes

DefinitionTerm
selectively permeable the ability of the cell membrane to allow certain materials to pass through and prevents other from passing through
diffusion one way in which some types of materials can pass through the cell membrane
osmosis the physical process of water moving throuh the cell membrane from a region of greater abundance to one of lesser abundance
active transport process by which cellular energy is used to transport material across the cell membrane
passive transport the movement of materials across the cell membrane without the use of cellular energy
cell division process during which one cell gives rise to two new cells
cell division process that produces two cells identical to the parent cell
cell membrane provides protection for the cell
cell membrane keeps the cell's inner content together
cell membrane regulates the movement of materials into and out of the cell
cell division responsibnle for the total number of cells in an organism
centromere structure that holds chromatids together
centriole a structue found in animal cell division that is not usually found in plant cell division
permeable membrane that allows all material to pass through
mitosis process in which the nucleus of a cell divides into two nuclei and the formation of two new daughter cells begins
interphase stage of cell division when the cell is performing its life functions
interphase stage of cell division when there is no evidence of cell division
interphase individual chromosomes are not visible
chromatin appearance of chromosomes during interphase
duplication process by which the individual chromosomes have made a copy of themselves
chromosome pair of sister chromatids
chromosomes become visible during late interphase
chromatids pair of identical chromosomes connected by centromere
prophase chromosomes become even more visible
prophase second stage of cell division
prophase each chromosome appears as a pair of chromatids attached by centromere
prophase centrioles move to opposite side of cell
prophase spindle fibers begin to appear around centrioles
prophase nuclear membrane begins to disappear
metaphase third stage of cell division
metaphase spindle fibers attach to centromeres
metaphase chromatids line up across the middle of the cell
anaphase centromere splits
anaphase spindle fibers pull one member of each chromatid to opposite side of cell
anaphase fourth stage of cell division
telophase fifth phase of cell division
telophase each chromosome begins to uncoil and become less visible
telophase nuclear membrane reforms ---nucleus becomes visible
cytokinesis process during which the cytoplasm divides producing two separate cells

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
