The Atmosphere
Vocabulary words for The Atmosphere Unit
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Atmosphere | A homogeneous mixture of gases that surrounds the Earth. |
| Homogeneous | uniform, unvaried, consistent |
| Air Pressure | The measure of the force with which the air molecules push on a surface. |
| Altitude | The height of an object above the Earth's surface. |
| Troposphere | The layer of the atmosphere closest to Earth. Weather occurs here, we live here, and it is the densest layer. |
| Stratosphere | The 2nd layer up from the Earth's surface. The ozone is located here so it warms up as you move upward. |
| Ozone | A molecule made of 3 oxygen atoms. It absorbs dangerous UV radiation. |
| Mesosphere | The 3rd layer of the atmosphere. It is the coldest layer and meteorites burn up here. There are also strong wind storms. |
| Thermosphere | The layer of the atmosphere farthest away from Earth's surface. It absorbs solar radiation and the particles move very fast. |
| Radiation | Heat from light. Energy moving thru space. The transfer of the Sun's energy as electromagnetic waves. |
| Conduction | The transfer of thermal energy from one material to another by direct contact. Heat thru contact. Energy moving in solids. |
| Convection | The transfer of thermal energy by the movement of a liquid or gas. Heat by moving gas or liquid. |
| Greenhouse Effect | The Earth's heating process in which the gases in the atmosphere trap thermal energy. |
| Wind | Moving air. |
| Coriolis Effect | The curving of the wind due to Earth's rotation. |
| Trade Winds | Winds that blow from 30 degrees latitude toward the equator. |
| Doldrums | Area of low pressure around the equator. Very little wind. |
| Horse Latitudes | 30 degrees north and south. Weak winds. |
| Westerlies | Wind belt between 30 degrees and 60 degrees N and S latitude. The major air movement for the USA. |
| Polar Easterlies | Wind belts that extend from the poles to 60 degrees latitude in both hemispheres. |
| Secondary Pollutants | Pollutants that form from chemical reactions of primary pollutants or naturally occurring pollutants. |
| Primary Pollutants | Pollutants put directly into the air by human or natural activity. |
| Asthma | a chronic disease of the lungs. |
| Ionosphere | The part of the thermosphere where there are electrically charged particles called ions. |
| Global Warming | A rise in average global temperatures |
| Radiation Balance | The balance between incoming energy and outgoing energy on Earth. |
| Jet Streams | Narrow belts of high speed winds that blow in the upper troposphere and lower stratosphere |
| Sea Breeze | Cool air moving toward the land due to an area of high pressure over the water and low pressure over the land. |
| Land Breeze | Cool air moving towards the water due to an area of low pressure over the water and high pressure over the land |
| Acid Precipitation | Precipitation that contains acids due to air pollution. |
