Chapter test over scientific method, measurement and metric system

QuestionAnswer
What are the 6 steps to the scientific method? 1. PROBLEM 2. Gather information RESEARCH 3. Make a HYPOTHESIS 4. Test your hypothesis(EXPERIMENT)5.Collect & ANALYZE DATA 6. Form a CONCLUSION
What is a control? A standard or "normal" to compare data and results in an experiment
What are variables? The part of the experiment that is tested (changed)
What is an independent variable? The factor in any experiment that is tested (you change it)
What is the dependent variable? The factor in any experiment that is observed or measured and happens a result of changing the independent variable.
What is a constant? Factors or variables in the experiment that stay the same and do not change.
What is quaNtitative data? Data that is made up of numbers, measurements & graphs.
What is quaLitative data? Data that is made up of observation you make using your senses.
What is a theory? An explanation backed by resultsm from many tests or experiments?
What is a law? Rules that describe the behavior of something in nature.Theories that become accepted over time become laws.
What is ethics? Moral values of what is good or bad. Science should not be biased but should deal in facts not good or bad.
What is the global system of measurement based on decimal or multiples of 10? The metric system
What is the measure of the distance from one point to another? It is distance.
What are the units and instrument used to measure length? The meter stick measured in meters.
What is the amount of space a material occupies? It is volume.
What are the units and instrument used to measure volume? The graduated cylinder measured in liters.
How do you calculate volume? V = Length x Width x Height
How do you measure volume of an irregularly shaped object using the displacement method? Place the object in a known volume of water. Re-measure the volume then subtract the two numbers.
What is the measure of the amount of matter in a substance? It is mass.
What are the untis and instrument used to measure mass? The triple beam balance measured in grams.
What is the measure of how fast atoms are moving? It is temperature.
What are the units andinstrument used to measure temperature? The thermometer measured in Celsius degrees.
How do you calculate temperature in the Kelvin scale? Kelvin = Celsius degrees + 273
What is the measure of gravity's effect on a mass? It is weight.
What is the measure of the mass in a certain volume? It is density.
What unit is density measured in? grams/ml
What is the density of water? 1 g/ml
What is the process of converting one unit into another by using conversion factors? It is dimensional analysis.
What are the units and instrument used to measure weight? The scale measured in Newtons.
