PlatebTectonics

TermDefinition
Lithosphere Rigid layer of earth about 100 km thick made of the crust and part of the upper mantle
Asthenophere Plastic like layer of earth on which the lithospheric plates float and move around
Density Differences in this cause not plastic-like rock to be forced upward toward the surface
Convection current Current in Earth's mantle that transfers heat in Earth's interior and is the driving force for plate tectonics
Continent One of the 6 or 7 great divisions of land on the globe
Continental drift Wegner's hypothesis that all continents were once connected in a single large landmass that broke apart about 200 million years ago and drifted slowly to their current positions.
Pangaea Large ancient landmass that was composed of all the continents joined together
Sea floor Portioin of Earth's crust that lies beneath ocean waters
Sea floor spreading Hess's theory that new sea floor is formed when magma is forced upward toward the surface at mid-ocean range
Converge To come together
Diverge To move apart
Transform To covert or change
Plate tectonics Theory that Earth's crust and upper mantle are broken into plates that float and move around on a plastic-like layerof the mantle
Plate A large section of Earth's oceanic or continental crust and rigid upper mantle that moves around on the asthenosphere

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
